The hidden message within the lines (We Rise Together) was inspired by the student body's ethos and generosity. We also held several in-depth community conversations, which harnessed the power of the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 to successfully encourage Duolingo to right some past wrongs regarding the building's wrought history. Offering participants a single pair of scissors and 40 pairs of porcelain baby shoes hanging from ribbons, this work challenges our preconceived notions of societal expectations around complicity and gun violence solutions. The participants are given no instructions, just offered the scissors after they are removed from a locked gun box while surrounded by the dangling baby shoes. It celebrated the humanity and dignity of women transitioning out of incarceration in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood. Through creative workshops with returning women See Her was inspired by their tenacity and future visions of success. The project was utilized as a benchmark for State Senator Sonia Chang Diaz to pass a criminal justice reform bill. After meeting this creative cohort of women, she added language supporting mothers and women into the legislation, which passed nine months later.
